A Texas Tradition...

With the return of school and football games starting, we now will be working on the Texas Homecoming Mum.
This is a phenomenon unto itself and yet not like any other thing you may have seen. Yes sir, football reigns every Friday night, but it is Homecoming that we are all about now.
The last couple of weeks we have been steadily cutting, stapling and gluing tons of ribbon, sparking things and trinkets together to bring you the Texas Homecoming Mum.
Not much has changed over the thirty years of making them. The kids still want big and gaudy. I still encourage simple and tasteful, if there is such a thing. Thank goodness we are not putting lights on them as we did in the past or feathers.
I really do get a kick out of it all because it is such a
tradition. I really enjoy making them, but seeing the kids with them is the best part. This year we created a new mum called Safari. It is made with black and white Zebra print ribbon. It is so different. These are not my mums pictured, but they are from photobucket. It is a pretty good representation of what it is all about.
When I had my flower shop, we did all of the homecoming court, the cheerleaders, the drill team and so many others. So this tradition continues. This is what I am up to through Oct. 17th, then we turn our efforts to Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanks for stopping by.

Mike, I'm having fun keeping the tradition. We have two more days until the first homecoming then we have three other schools.

The town I work in is very small and we are the only flower/gift shop, so we stay busy.

Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting. Hope all is well with you.

Thom, it is a lot of work, but I love my work and the kids, so it is really fun! Does that make any sense?

Michelle, it is a lot of work and it makes my hands hurt, but I am so loving this job. I am tired from working every day, but next week I will return to part time days.

I hope that you have been well, too. I have not been in the blogging mood, thus I am not visiting my favorite blogs. I will be stopping by soon as I can.

Blessings to you and yours.

This may sound stupid but what exactly is 'homecoming' and 'mums' and what do you do with the ribbons? :0

How about doing a post about it for us foreigners that have never heard of it?

It looks like fun Pam! A great creative outlet too.

Akelamula, Homecoming is an annual school or university reunion for graduates. It is all about the football game. In college, grads and us older folks would return to our alma mata to visit friends, attend the football games and other various get togethers with the alumni.

Now in high school,it is still centered around a football game, but it is mostly for the students. Some high schools will have a King and Queen of the homecoming court. The duchesses are nominated from different clubs and organizations from the high school, i.e. band, spanish club, agriculture, and so forth. Then the student body votes for the person they want as their king and queen. The whole week is centered around all kinds of activities like pep rallies, parades, bonfires, and other fun stuff.

During half time the court is presented to the audiences and the king and queen are announced. The duchesses are escorted by their dads or boyfriends. The queen usually receives a bouquet of roses or something special to commemorate this event.

Usually a special student will be selected for his achievement in an unusual circumstance. One year our valdictorian was seriously injured and it took him a long time to recover, so he was our meritous student that was highlighted during the half. There are so many variations to homecoming, but as for my part as a florist, I make these decorated silk mums with all kinds of stuff on them. It is so much fun. The students can wear them to school and just enjoy being a teenager.

Maybe, I should do a seperate post on homecoming. LOL! I am sure you must have something as special in your country. I hope all this makes sense. Thanks for asking.
