Baby Squirrel

Hubs comes in yesterday evening and says "Look what I found." I never know what to expect when he says that! "I say take that thing outside!" Hubs says "but I found him on the ground and he is weak and hot." I say "take him back to his mother. She will take care of him."

All this transpires, while I am on the elliptical and trying to get my time of torture over with.
With the squirrel wrapped in one of my best dish towels, he is searching the Internet on how to care for squirrels. You can't feed baby squirrels just anything because they are mostly vegans. Scalded milk or canned evaporated milk mixed with equal parts of water. When he is older he can eat nuts and veggies.

Yes, I know he is cute, but I don't want to have a pet squirrel. We have two cats and two dogs and that is all we need is a pet squirrel. So hubs ask me to find the dropper and I have to look every where until I find it. He feeds the little guy some water, places him in a plastic box that he raided from the closet with a heating pad and of course my best dish towel. He looks like he is dying to me and I don't want to be a part of seeing it die.
So after a few hours, he feeds him canned milk warmed to just the perfect temperature. He is getting better by the moment. He slept in our bedroom last night. I said " Maybe you should put the laundry basket over his bed?"

What is it about a man that makes him feel like he is twelve again? Hubs said " I have always wanted to raise a squirrel." So much to my surprise the little guy is doing well as far as I could tell by peeking in the laundry basket holes. He needs to be fed four times a day. I am guessing that Hubs will come home and feed this little guy at lunch time.

UPDATE ON THE SQUIRREL

The little squirrel is sleeping and eating so far. Hubs is now watching for any signs of injury or bruising in his diaphram. We hope he will not have any brain injury. I may have sounded like I thought this was funny, but believe me we do take this serious. We have contacted a rehabber and she has sent us all the information on what to do for this little squirrel. The next 24-48 hours are critical to it's survival. So far she is doing well. Sleeping a lot, eating and today he climbed up Hubs arm.

Thank you all for your comments and support. Also, I noticed that to read all of the comments you must scroll all the way down to the bottom.

LATEST UPDATE AS OF 8:45 p.m. 9/18/10

We found out the source we were using was not an official rehabber. I have taken her site down and will tell you about the correct site. Her name is Sara Rowe at scrag@aol.com

Hubs spent the afternoon searching for the correct food. We are now using Esbilac powder for puppies with whipping cream added to it as well. The little squirrel really ate it up. He escaped from his box covered with the laundry this afternoon. We have now place his box inside a pet carrier and the heating pad to keep him warm.

It has been an upsetting day full of research. My friend Michelle was responsible for getting the correct information to us. I want to say thank you, Michelle.

We are not in Kansas anymore...

What a dreadful night night this has been. There have been tornadoes everywhere in east Texas. One touched down in Waskom and did some damage, but thankfully no one was hurt. Pine trees broken like toothpicks along I-20 and houses demolished. This is a very small town and it is where I work at this one-hundred year old house that is a gift and garden shop. It was not damaged, but a lot of electric poles are cut in half. I guess I will see the damage tomorrow.

My friends FB me to make sure we were OK, then they had tornadoes as well, but no damage. If there is one thing I can't stand it is tornadoes. Too many bad memories of them as a child. We are so blessed by the technology to give us advance warning when a storm is becoming a real threat. In the old days, we had nothing but the color of the sky, the direction of the winds and the tale tell sign of hail. You can not imagine how bad all this weather looks on a 55 inch HD flat screen TV. But what scares me more is that we currently live in a pre-manufactured home built on pier and beam. It is secured to the ground. I told Hubs that we should build a storm shelter for six people. He ask why? Well for you, me, sister Candy, three big dogs and three cats.

At first we thought about building a house, but this one is fairly new and we are really busy with clearing the land. We had a huge deck built on the back. My builder said the safest place during a tornado would be under neath the deck because of all of the cemented post. I am not that desperate yet. My neighbor lives in a Quonset hut and it will sustain winds up to 185 mph. I have gone there before, but thankfully no tornado then.

So I close tonight with gratitude that no one was hurt. Gratitude that we have a roof over our head, we have food and water. We are so blessed beyond measure. It breaks my heart that the Haitians have experienced another earthquake. How much more can they take? Tonight, I close in prayer for Haiti and all the survivors, the doctors, the search and rescue teams, the children, those in pain and those that have lost loved ones. May God lift them up in their darkest hour.

The day after.

It was a quiet Christmas for my husband and myself. Nothing eventful, just time to be together. No family, no fancy meal, no gifts, just simply time with one another. It was just perfect. You know it is funny as the years go by that we need or should I say want less and less things in this life. Living with my dear husband is like Christmas all through out the year because he gives me all that I could want for and more. I am a very blessed woman.

When we were young, we fell into that trap about wants versus needs. We wanted too much. Of course with marriage comes children and their needs came first. It gets so out of hand trying to buy gifts for all of your family and extended family. Just ridiculous! So after my sons got a little older, they knew about Santa, but still believed in the spirit of Christmas and giving to others. I made a conscious effort to give less and less to my family and more to others. The boys would clean out their toys to pass along to others. It may have been hard for them, but I believe that something good happened from that very moment. I am sure that my oldest son will weigh in on that! That moment, we put Jesus Christ first. Seems to me that when you think about others needs before your own desires that is what the spirit of Christmas is all about. May you all keep the season in your heart throughout the year. Love one another and help one another.

Love is all we have...

The custodian at my church needs surgery and she can not afford it because she has no insurance. She works part time. She has gone through all the motions of applying for TANF, welfare, and is still waiting. I don't understand why the government would make her wait so long to get approved for surgery. She has a mass in her stomach and is in pain. On her day off, she will go and wait all day again for more applications and processing. This is how we treat those in need? I always have a soft spot in my heart for those in need, yet it is so frustrating to find help or support for those in need. I am remembering days long ago when people cared about those in need and helped one another.

Urgent: Orissa, India

Jim may have sent this to some of you already but here it is just in case he didn't send it to you: Subject: Urgent Prayer Request For YWAM (Youth With A Mission) Missionaries In India. This is a request for prayer for YWAM missionaries and their churches in Orissa , India . Please read and make this a matter of urgent prayer.

Dear beloved sponsors and friends of Good News India:

We have never seen anything like this. We knew that Orissa was the most resistant and hostile State in India as far as the Gospel is concerned. And we brushed off the continuous threats and harassment we faced as we went about His work. But none of our staff imagined that they would see this kind of carnage.... And it seems to be totally under the radar of the Western Media ....

Let me explain.... A militant Hindu priest and 4 of his attendants, who were zealously going around the villages of Orissa and 'reconverting' people back to Hinduism, were gunned down by unknown assailants in Central Orissa last weekend. Immediately the Christians were blamed. The cry rose up...'Kill the Christians!' And the horror began.... I the past 4 days, we have first hand witness to hundreds of churches being blown up or burned and many, many dozens of Christian tribals have been slaughtered. For no other reason than they bear the name of Christ. Night and day I have been in touch with our Good News India Directors spread across 14 Dream Centers in Orissa... they are right in the middle of all this chaos.

In Tihidi, just after the police came to offer protection, a group of 70 blood-thirsty militants came to kill our staff and destroy the home. They were not allowed to get in, but they did a lot of damage to our Dream Center by throwing rocks and bricks and smashing our gate, etc. They have promised to come back and 'finish the job.' Our kids and staff are locked inside and have stayed that way with doors and windows shut for the past 3 days. It has been a time of desperately calling on the Lord in prayer. More police have come to offer protection.

In Kalahandi, the police and some local sympathizers got to our dream center and gave our staff and kids about 3 minutes notice to vacate. No one had time to even grab a change of clothes or any personal belonging. As they fled, the blood thirsty mob came to kill everyone in the building. We would have had a mass funeral there, but for His grace.

In Phulbani, the mob came looking for Christian homes and missions. The local Hindu people, our neighbors turned them away by saying that there were no Christians in this area. So they left. We had favor. The same thing happened in Balasore. All our dream centers are under lock down with the kids and staff huddled inside and police outside. The fanatics are circling outside waiting for a chance to kill. Others were not so fortunate.

In a nearby Catholic orphanage, the mob allowed the kids to leave and locked up a Priest and a computer teacher in house and burned them to death. Many believers have been killed and hacked into pieces and left on the road.... even women and children. At another orphanage run by another organization, when this began, the Director and his wife jumped on their motorbike and simply fled, leaving all the children and staff behind. Every one of our GNI directors that I have spoken to said: 'We stay with our kids.... we live together or die together, but we will never abandon what God has called us to do.'

More than 5000 Christian families have had their homes burned or destroyed. They have fled into the jungles and are living in great fear waiting for the authorities to bring about peace. But so far, no peace is foreseen. This will continue for another 10 days.... supposedly the 14 day mourning period for the slain Hindu priest. Many more Christians will die and their houses destroyed. Many more churches will be smashed down. The Federal government is trying to restore order and perhaps things will calm down.

We ask for your prayers. Only the Hand of God can calm this storm. None of us know the meaning of persecution. But now our kids and staff know what that means. So many of our kids coming from Hindu backgrounds are confused and totally bewildered at what is happening around them. So many of their guardians have fled into the jungles and are unable to come and get them during these trying times. Through all this, I am more determined than ever to continue with our goal: the transformation of a community by transforming its children. Orissa will be saved... that is our heart's cry. If we can take these thousands of throw-away children and help them to become disciples of Jesus, they will transform an entire region. It is a long term goal, but it is strategic thinking in terms of the Great Commission.

What can you do? First, please uphold all this in fervent prayer. Second, pass this e-mail on to as many friends as you can. We must get the word out and increase our prayer base for this is spiritual warfare at its most basic meaning. We are literally fighting the devil in order to live for His Kingdom. The next 10 days are crucial. We pray for peace and calm to pervade across Orissa. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please pass it on and help us to get as many people to partner with us on this cutting edge effort to fulfill His mandate: Go and make disciples of all nations.... Prayer works!

Blessings,
